About This Course

The Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport is a two-year, full-time programme designed for learners who want to build a comprehensive understanding of the sport, fitness, and coaching industries while developing the knowledge and practical skills needed for employment or higher education.

You’ll study a wide range of topics that combine theory and applied practice, including anatomy and physiology, fitness training, sports leadership, psychology, performance analysis, coaching practice, and professional development in the sport and physical activity sector. Throughout the course you’ll complete practical assessments, written assignments, and real-world projects rather than relying solely on exams.

This qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and carries UCAS points for university progression. Many learners move on to foundation or full degrees in Sport Coaching, Sport Science, or Physical Education, while others progress directly into employment in coaching, fitness, or leisure management.

What will I study?

You'll cover subjects such as anatomy and physiology, fitness training and testing, coaching practice, sports leadership, psychology, performance analysis and professional development. Learning takes place through projects, assignments, and practical sessions rather than written exams.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is mainly through coursework, portfolios, presentations and practical demonstrations. A small number of externally assessed units are included, but there are no traditional end-of-year exams.

What are the entry requirements?

Normally four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English or Maths, or a relevant Level 2 sport qualification. A strong interest in sport and physical activity is essential.

Where can this qualification take me?

Most learners progress to university to study Sport Coaching, Sport Science, or Physical Education. Others move into employment or higher apprenticeships in coaching, fitness or leisure management.

Will I need to wear a uniform or kit?

Yes. Students represent the College in a professional environment and are required to wear approved sports kit for practical sessions and fixtures.

Can I take English or Maths alongside this course?

Yes. If you haven't already achieved GCSE grade 4 in English or Maths, you'll study Functional Skills or GCSE resits alongside your main qualification.

Is there any work experience?

You'll complete placements with sports clubs, schools, or community organisations, allowing you to apply what you've learned in real-life coaching and fitness settings.
