Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Sport with Work Skills

A supportive 12-week course that helps learners build confidence, develop basic sport and employability skills and prepare for progression onto our Level 2 programmes.

Who this course is for

This programme is designed for learners who may have struggled previously in education or who need a smaller, more supportive step back into learning. You do not need GCSEs or previous qualifications in sport.

Learners will be supported to develop confidence, routine, teamwork and communication skills while working towards recognised Level 1 qualifications.

What you’ll study

During the course, learners will complete two qualifications:

Pearson BTEC Level 1 Introductory Award in Sport

Units include Developing a Personal Plan and Playing Sport. Learners will explore their strengths, set goals, take part in practical sports sessions and learn how sport supports physical and mental wellbeing.

Pearson BTEC Level 1 Subsidiary Award in Work Skills

This qualification focuses on employability skills such as communication, teamwork, time management and preparing for the workplace.

Learning is practical, supportive and delivered in small groups with regular guidance from tutors.

How the course is delivered

The course runs for 12 weeks and is delivered in person at Robin Park Leisure Centre. Sessions are designed to be engaging and hands-on, with a strong focus on participation rather than exams.

Tutors provide regular feedback and support, helping learners build confidence and positive learning habits.

Progression opportunities

This course is designed as a stepping stone. Learners who complete the programme successfully will be supported to progress onto our Level 2 Sport or Fitness programmes at Wigan Warriors College.

For some learners, the course may also support progression into further training, volunteering or entry-level employment.
